Falls Church, VA - 15 April 2008 - R2AD, a defense contracting firm, delivered a new virtual client technology to the Department of Defense this past quarter. While simple in design, this application of virtual technology allows the desktop office computers to now be used as command and control clients "On-Demand". The virtual instance contains all the software which makes up the latest version of the popular GCCS-J baseline which is planned for global fielding this Summer.
R2AD's CTO, Michael Behrens explains, "Flexibility is important to our customers and with virtualization technology on the client using VMWare software, specialized containers can be accessed quickly. The introduction of this technology to the desktop makes installs and maintenance easier, without disturbing what might already be on the existing host.".
Also being researched are the vast capabilities presented on the server side. The program is already using Solaris 10 Zones for virtualized containers in the server rooms which help optimize utilization of resources. Architecting the entire system and bringing them all together with secure access technologies is part of the on-going research and development.
